A HISTORICAL GLIMPSE AT THE MONASTERY OF ST. CYPRIAN AND JUSTINE, KFIFANE

NOTICE HISTORIQUE SUR LE MONASTERE SAINTS CYPRIEN ET JUSTINE, KFIFANE

The old building of the monastery had existed even before the seventh century A.D. and there is a dating of the monastery as early as 717 A.D. It was named after the Two martyrs Cypian and Justine when it was converted in 1230 into a patriarchal see in the days of Maronite Patriarch Daniel of Shamat.

In 1766 the Lebanese Maronite Order received the monastery, whose first superior was appointed in 1775.

The monastery became a major seminary for teaching philosophy, theology, literature and law. among its graduates were a large number of priests, including Father Nimatullah Kassab al-Hardiny or al-Hardeeny (Saint Nimatullah), Father Charbel Makhlouf (Saint Charbel), Father Emmanuel Gemayel and Father Nimatullah al-Kafry... Studying was resumed in it in 1891.

In 1897, superiors added another boarding school.

In 1899, the novitiate was erected in the monastery and lasted until 1950. Then it was erected again in 1977 and has remained there ever since.

The monastery currently contains the tombs of Saint Nimatullah Kassab al-Hardini and Righteous Brother Estephan Nehmeh.

L’histoire de ce monastère remonte, en ce qui concerne son ancien bâtiment, à une époque antérieure au VIIe siècle ap. J.-C. Il est mentionné dans une note historique de l’année 717. Il a été dédie aux deux martyrs Cyprien et Justine, lorsqu’il a été transformé en siège patriarcal du temps du patriarche maronite Daniel de Chamat, en 1230.
L’Ordre Libanais Maronite l’a reçu en 1766. Son premier supérieur fut désigné en 1775.

Il a été désigne comme séminaire monastique supérieur pour l’enseignement de la philosophie, de la théologie, des lettres et du droit, de 1808 a 1874. De nombreux prêtres ont été parmi ses anciens. Parmi les plus célèbres : Le père Nimatullah Kassab al-Hardini, le père Charbel Makhlouf ( Saint Charbel), le père Emmanuel Gemayel et le père Nimatullah al-Kafri… On y reprit l’enseignement en 1891.

En 1897, les Supérieurs ont associé à ce séminaire, un autre à régime d’étudiants internes et externes.

En 1899, le monastère de Kfifane est transformé en un monastère pour le noviciat, jusqu'à l’année 1950.

Il a été de nouveau désigné comme centre de noviciat, en 1977 et jusqu'à nos jours.

Ce monastère renferme actuellement la tombe du Bienheureux P. Nimatullah Kassab al-Hardini et la dépouille du juste, Frère Estephan Nehmé.

NOTICE SUR LA VIE DE ST. NIMATULLAH KASSAB AL-HARDINI

Youssef Kassab was born in Hardine (or Hardeen) of Batroun, in 1808. His father was Gerges Kassab and his mother Maryam Raad.

He entered the Lebanese Maronite Order's school at Saint Anthony's Monastery in Houb in 1816 stayed there until 1822.

He jointed the noviciate group at Saint Anthony's Monastery of Kozhaya in November 1828, adopted the name Brother Nimatullah. There, he learned the craft of bookbinding.

He made solemn profession on November 14, 1830.

Having completed his theological studies, he was ordained a priest at the Kfifane monastery, on December 25, 1833, by the laying-on of hands of Bishop Semaan Zouein.

He assumed the responsibility of assistant general three times: 1845-1848, 1850-1853, 1856-1858.

He kept practicing his skill of bookbinding even when was assistant general. He taught at various schools of the Lebanese Maronite Order.

Among his students was Brother Charbel Makhlouf (Saint Charbel), who studied under him 1853-1858.

He died at St. Cyprian and Justine's Monastery on December 14, 1858, after an incurable illness.

After transferring and sealing the body, the beatification case was submitted to the Apostolic See in Rome on May 4, 1926.

He was declared Venerable on September 7, 1989.

At the behest of His Beatitude Patriarch Nasrallah Peter SFEIR, his body was examined and transferred to a new coffin on May 18, 1996.

Youssef Kassab est né à Hardine ( Caza de Batroun) en 1808. Son père est Gerges Kassab, sa mère Maryam Raad.
Il entra a l’école du monastère Saint-Antoine, Houb, dépendant de l’Ordre Libanais Maronite, et y resta de 1816 a 1822.

Il entra au monastère Saint-Antoine, Kozhaya, comme novice, en novembre 1828, et prit le nom de frère Nimatullah. Là, il apprit aussi l’art de la reliure des livres.

Il prononça ses vœux solennels le 14 novembre 1830.

Après avoir achevé ses études théologiques, il fut ordonné prêtre au monastère de Kfifane, le 25 décembre 1833, par l’imposition des mains de l’évêque Semaan Zouein.

La charge d’Assistant Général de l’Ordre Libanais Maronite lui a été confié à trois reprises : 1845-1848, 1850-1853, 1856-1858.

Il continua à pratiquer l’art de la reliure des livres, même au cours de sa charge d’Assistant Général.

Il pratiqua l’enseignement dans les écoles de l’Ordre Libanais Maronite, surtout au monastère de Kfifane.

Le frère Charbel Makhlouf (Saint Charbel) fut parmi ses élèves de 1853 a 1858.

Il décéda au monastère Saints Cyprien et Justine, Kfifane, le 14 décembre 1858, à la suite d’une maladie grave qui l’atteignit.

Sa dépouille fut déplacée saine, en 1862, à une cellule à l’Est du monastère de Kfifane, sous l’effet de l’insistance des nombreux visiteurs et à l’ordre du Patriarche Paul Massaad.

Après le déplacement de la dépouille et l’apposition des scellés, on présente la cause de béatification au Saint- Siège à Rome, le 4 mai 1926.

Il a été déclare vénérable le 7 septembre 1989.

A l’ordre de sa Béatitude le Patriarche Mar Nasrallah Pierre SFEIR, on découvrit sa dépouille qui fut transférée dans un nouveau cercueil le 18 mai 1996.

Pope John Paul II beatified him at Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome on Sunday May 10, 1998.

The Maronite Church celebrates his feast-day on the 14th of December.

Pope John Paul II will declare Him Saint for the whole church on May 16, 2004.

Par son intercession, plusieurs guérisons ont été accomplies : un aveugle, un paralytique, la résurrection d’un bébé mort, la guérison d’un enfant, la guérison d’une malade nerveuse, la guérison d’une maladie de cancer.

Sa Sainteté le Pape Jean-Paul II, a célébré sa béatification à la Basilique Saint-Pierre, au Vatican, la Dimanche 10 mai 1998.
Fête à l’Eglise Maronite : le 14 décembre.

Sa Sainteté le Pape Jean-Paul II, célébrera sa canonisation à la Basilique Saint-Pierre, au Vatican, la Dimanche 16 mai 2004.

PRIERE

O Heavenly Father, the source of all holiness, You are glorified in your saints. You have bestowed grace upon Mar Nimatullah, so He forsake the world to live for You and with You in the solitude of the monastery.

O Lord Jesus, the Holy One of all saints, You have called Mar Nimatullah and filled Him with Your grace and blessing. So He could follow You on the harrow path of perfection and holiness. He followed Your path carrying His cross with joy, the cross of communal life, by which He was sanctified.

O Holy Spirit, Sanctifier of saints, You have inspired our patron Nimatullah, so that He became a monk and lived with His brethren in the monastery, where He educated them and managed all things wisely and prudently. He was ideal and encourager to Saint Charbel His disciple and many others.

We beseech You, O Holy Trinity, through Mar Nimatullah to enlighten the path of salvation before us, for You are the first and last aim. Bring us back to You so that we may renew the image and the likeness that You have installed in us.

We thank You and glorify You with our mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, of whom Mar Nimatullah was a devout, and with Yous saints, You who live and reign in holiness for ever, Amen!
